�� Horse Gram Millet – Description

Horse Gram, also called Kollu in Tamil, is a traditional legume often grouped with millets due to its nutritional richness and traditional use. Though technically a pulse, it is widely used in millet-based diets for its high protein, iron, calcium, and fiber content. Known for its heat-generating properties, horse gram supports weight loss, improves digestion, controls diabetes, and helps manage respiratory and kidney-related issues.

It is commonly used to prepare kollu rasam, sundal, podi, soups, and kanji.


✅ Horse Gram Millet – Care Tips
1. Storage:
Store in a clean, airtight container to keep out moisture and pests.
Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
In hot or humid climates, store in the refrigerator to increase shelf life.

2. Shelf Life:
At room temperature: 6–8 months
In the fridge: up to 12 months

3. Pest Prevention:
Add dried neem leaves, bay leaves, or red chilies in the container to prevent infestation.
Avoid storing near the stove or wet areas.

4. Before Cooking:
Soak for 6–8 hours or overnight to soften and reduce cooking time.
Soaked horse gram can also be sprouted for enhanced nutrition.
Pressure cooking is recommended, as the grain is very hard by nature.

5. Usage Tips:
Suitable for making soups, rasam, porridge, or as a dry stir-fry (sundal).
