Rock Salt – Description

Rock salt, also known as Sendha Namak (in Hindi) or Induppu (in Tamil), is a naturally occurring form of salt (halite) mined from salt rocks. It is unrefined and contains essential minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Rock salt is typically pink, white, or translucent in color and is used both in cooking and therapeutic uses (like for digestion, skin, and respiratory health).

1. Storage:

Store rock salt in an airtight container to prevent it from absorbing moisture.

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.

Avoid storing near the stove or sink where steam and splashes may affect its texture.

2. Handling:

Use dry hands or a dry spoon to scoop it to avoid clumping.

If it hardens, gently crush it using a mortar-pestle or grinder. 

3. Shelf Life:

Rock salt has an indefinite shelf life when stored properly.

If exposed to moisture, it may form lumps, but it’s still usable after crushing.
